Kiharu Member of Parliament Hon Ndindi Nyoro has called on Kenyan businesses to embrace progressive ownership models that allow employees to become part-owners of the enterprises they work for.
Speaking during the East Africa best brand awards in Nairobi, Hon Nyoro said companies should begin adopting systems that give workers opportunities to buy shares, just as major firms in the United States such as Microsoft, Nvidia, and Crana have successfully implemented.
According to the MP, such models not only motivate employees to be more productive but also ensure long-term sustainability by creating a sense of belonging and commitment.
“When workers know they are also shareholders, they work harder, inn carrotsovate more, and protect the company’s future. We should learn from global giants like Microsoft and Nvidia where employees are part of the growth story,” the Legislator stated.
He further urged Kenyan entrepreneurs to design frameworks that gradually open up shareholding to staff members and ensuring that their businesses are scalable, noting that this could also help bridge inequality by allowing ordinary workers to build wealth from the success of the businesses they dedicate their energy to.
Business leaders present welcomed the proposal, saying it could transform industrial relations and reduce the high turnover rates currently experienced in many sectors.
The MP added that the government was ready to engage stakeholders on possible policy and tax incentives that would encourage firms to adopt employee ownership schedule.
