FEDERATION OF KENYA WOMEN LAWYERS URGES GOVERNMENT TO ENACT LAWS AGAINST TECHNOLOGY -FACILITATED VIOLENCE

The Federation of Kenya Women Lawyers (FIDA Kenya) and Nigeria has called on the government to implement comprehensive legislation aimed at safeguarding women and young people from technology-facilitated violence. This appeal comes in response to the increasing incidents of cyber harassment, online stalking a recent case emanating from a prominent lawmaker in Nairobi.
During a press conference held in Nairobi, FIDA Kenya representatives highlighted alarming statistics that reveal a surge in technology-facilitated violence, particularly during this digital era where almost 90% of young people are tech sarvey . And many individuals rely on digital platforms for communication and social interaction. The organization emphasized that without legal protections, victims often face significant barriers in seeking justice and support.

FIDA Kenya is advocating for the establishment of laws that would define and criminalize various forms of technology-facilitated violence, including cyberbullying, revenge porn, and online harassment. The organization also calls for the creation of support systems, such as helplines and counseling services, to assist victims in navigating the complexities of digital abuse.
In addition to legislative measures, FIDA Kenya together with their Nigerian counterparts are urging the government to invest in public awareness campaigns aimed at educating citizens about the risks associated with technology and the importance of respectful online behavior. They believe that fostering a culture of digital responsibility is essential in combating technology-facilitated violence.
The call for action has garnered support from various stakeholders, including human rights organizations, youth groups, and legal experts, who stress the need for a multi-faceted approach to address this pressing issue.
As the conversation around technology and safety continues to evolve, FIDA Kenya remains committed to advocating for the rights of women and young people, ensuring that they can navigate the digital landscape free from fear and violence.
