Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba Claims Death Threats After Accusing Parliamentary Clerk of Sexual Harassment

Nominated senator Gloria Orwoba has come forward alluding to death threats and intimidation on her life and together with her staff following recent allegations of sexual harassment against a senior clerk in the senate.
Speaking during a press briefing at Nairobi Area, the
senator now states that her life is in danger and has for has been receiving
numerous anonymous calls and messages warning her to drop the matter or face “personal
or political consequences”.
“I refuse to be silenced because what I experienced is not
just a violation of my personal space and dignity, but also a reflection of a
deeper rot that must be confronted within our institutions and today I represent
many parliamentary staff, women parliamentarians and not forgetting the women
senators who have chosen to be behind the curtains.” Stated Nominated Senator
Orwoba.
Hon Orwoba alleges that Jeremiah Nyegenye clerk to the senate,
who holds a powerful administrative role in Parliament, has refused to table
the travel report which is public document and her allegations are based on. According to the senator her refusal to engage led to subtle sidelining from key
parliamentary activities, committee trips and eventual threats. A matter she says has
led her not receive 6 months’ salary.
The matter has sparked renewed debate on the treatment of
women in leadership and the challenges they face in male-dominated spaces. The
senator vowed to pursue justice, calling on civil society and the public to
support survivors who speak out.
The office of the Clerk of the Senate has denied the
allegations, terming them as "baseless, malicious and politically
motivated. In A statement released by the office reads: “The Clerk upholds the
highest standards of integrity and professionalism. These accusations are an
unfortunate attempt to tarnish his image and derail ongoing reforms in the
Parliamentary Service.”
Women lawmakers, have rallied behind the senator, demanding
an independent investigation and calling on Parliament to enforce a
zero-tolerance policy on sexual misconduct.
Meanwhile, the Senate leadership has yet to issue an
official statement on the allegations or the reported threats against the
senator.
