The Government has assured traders affected by the devastating fire that swept through Nairobi's Gikomba Market of its full support as efforts to establish the cause of the inferno gather pace.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura conveyed the government's message of solidarity to thousands of traders who suffered massive losses following the blaze that destroyed businesses, merchandise and sources of livelihood for many families.

Speaking after assessing the situation, Mwaura said the government stands with the affected traders and will work closely with both national and county authorities to ensure victims receive the necessary support to rebuild their businesses and livelihoods.

"The Government deeply sympathizes with all traders and families affected by this unfortunate tragedy. We recognize the immense losses suffered and assure all victims that they will not walk this journey alone. The Government is committed to supporting recovery efforts and restoring normalcy in the shortest time possible," he said.

The spokesperson further announced that a comprehensive investigation involving relevant security and disaster management agencies will be launched immediately to establish the cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.

"We have directed the relevant investigative agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding this fire. Kenyans deserve answers, and those responsible, if any wrongdoing is established, will be held accountable," he stated.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning, left hundreds of traders counting losses worth millions of shillings. Reports indicate that several sections of the market were reduced to ashes, while emergency response teams worked for hours to contain the flames. Authorities have also confirmed fatalities and injuries arising from the incident.

Mwaura acknowledged the recurring fire incidents that have plagued Gikomba Market over the years, emphasizing the need for lasting solutions, including improved market infrastructure, enhanced fire safety systems, and better emergency preparedness.

He assured traders that the government would work with stakeholders to strengthen safety measures and ensure that Gikomba, one of East Africa's largest trading hubs, remains a secure environment for business operations.

Leaders from both the national and county governments have already begun consultations with traders' representatives to assess the extent of the damage and coordinate relief and recovery efforts. Authorities are also undertaking the enumeration of affected traders to facilitate support interventions.

Traders, while welcoming the government's assurances, have called for speedy compensation and concrete measures to end the cycle of devastating fires that have repeatedly disrupted business activities at the market. Many victims said they lost their entire stock and now face an uncertain future.

As investigations commence, the government has appealed for calm and cooperation from the public, assuring affected traders that every effort will be made to uncover the cause of the tragedy and support the rebuilding process.

"Our focus now is on helping victims recover while ensuring a thorough investigation is conducted. Gikomba traders are a critical part of Kenya's economy, and their welfare remains a priority," Mwaura said.
